Wide operating temperature - Silicone sponge has a temperature range of -73°C to 200°C.

What's the Difference Between Silicone Foam and Soft Flame Resistant Silicone Sponge?
Silicone foam and silicone sponge are both versatile materials used in various industries, They are two different materials with distinct properties. Here's how they differ:
Composition
Silicone foam is typically composed of silicone rubber and a blowing agent, which creates gas bubbles or cells in the material. This results in a more open-cell structure, similar to regular foam materials like polyurethane foam and has interconnected air pockets that allow for airflow and compression. On the other hand, silicone sponge is made by incorporating a filler material into the silicone rubber, creating a closed-cell structure, meaning its cells are sealed off from each other.

Density & Compression
Silicone foam generally has a lower density and is softer compared to silicone sponge. It is more compressible and offers better cushioning and shock absorption properties and will quickly recover its shape when pressure is released. Silicone sponge, being denser and more rigid, provides higher compression strength and is better suited for applications requiring stability and resistance to deformation.

Thermal Insulation
Due to their differing structures, silicone foam and silicone sponge have different thermal insulation properties. Silicone foam, with its open-cell structure, allows air circulation within the material, making it a better thermal insulator. Silicone sponge, with its closed-cell structure, offers less thermal insulation but provides superior resistance to heat transfer – it has a higher compressive strength and slower recovery rate.

Water Absorption
Silicone foam has higher water absorption capabilities due to its open-cell structure, which can be advantageous in certain applications, such as sealing against moisture or creating water-resistant barriers. Silicone sponge, with its closed-cell structure, has lower water absorption properties.

Applications
Both silicone foam and silicone sponge find applications in various fields. Silicone foam is commonly used in cushioning, padding, and vibration dampening applications. Silicone sponge is often utilised for sealing, gap filling, insulation, gaskets, thermal management applications and other applications requiring a reliable barrier against external elements. It provides a reliable seal against dust, air, water, and other environmental elements. Silicone foam, with its open-cell structure, is not ideal for sealing purposes as it allows for permeability.

How Hot Can Soft Flame Resistant Silicone Sponge Get Before It Melts?
The first thing you will notice is that silicone doesn't melt due to temperature alone!
For example, if heated up to 150°C you would see very little change in the silicone, even if held at this temperature for a very long time, At 200°C the silicone will slowly become harder and less stretchy with time, and if the silicone was heated up to a temperature beyond 300°C, you would quickly see the material become harder and less stretchy in a very short time, due to such extreme temperature conditions but it would not melt.
Special grades are available to further increase silicones already naturally high resistance to heat such as our silicone grade THT which can be used intermittently at temperatures up to 300°C. Silicones melting point auto ignition temperature is approximately 450°C, service at such a high temperature is not recommended.

Flame retardant silicone sponge uses the same formulation of silicone sponge but offers improved mechanical properties including improved tear and tensile strength and abrasion resistance.
It offers excellent resistance to environmental factors resisting excessive damage caused by Ozone and general weathering, including frost where other rubber materials would crack or become brittle.
Flame retardant silicone sponge is not only suitable for use in extreme temperature applications, but also for vibration, sound and thermal insulation, cushioning and sealing.
How Do You Measure Soft Flame Resistant Silicone Sponge Fire Resistance?
Follows established standardized testing for your product requirements. A common fire resistance standard in the automotive industry is FMVSS 302 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 302) in the USA or ISO 3795 in Europe, Canada, and Japan. FMVSS 302 specifies burn resistances for components of occupant compartments of motor vehicles.
Where smoke and heat release is a concern, ASTM E1354 measures effective heat of combustion, smoke production, and more. You may have also heard of UL 94, a test standard typically used to test thermoplastics used in appliances and other devices.
Silicone is softer than rubber and retains a lower tensile strength, but soft silicone rubber can last longer in extreme high and low temperatures and damaging environmental factors. Soft silicone rubber generally has a lower tensile strength and low wear and tear strength than rubber. Despite this, soft silicone rubber does still maintain a good level of tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Although silicone is softer than rubber, it will retain better properties when exposed to extreme high and low temperatures. For instance, Some properties such as elongation, creep, cyclic flexing, tear strength, compression set, dielectric strength (at high voltage), thermal conductivity, fire resistance, and in some cases tensile strength can be – at extreme temperatures – far superior to organic rubbers in general.
Soft silicone rubber can stay flexible in temperatures as low as -103 degrees Fahrenheit without becoming susceptible to embrittlement which is the hardening of rubber when exposed to low temperatures that causes the material to lose their ductility and flexibility. Rubber is highly susceptible to damage cause by embrittlement and will eventually crack or fail when exposed to low temperatures. Additionally, in high temperatures of up to +500 degrees Fahrenheit, soft silicone rubber will not melt and will remain reliable in an application while rubber will melt or burn in high temperatures. Although it retains a lower tensile strength, soft silicone rubber is able to remain resilient in harsher environments and factors than rubber.
What Temperatures Can Soft Flame Resistant Silicone Sponge Tolerate?
Silicone is incredibly popular due to its tolerance for extremes of temperature. Most silicones have an operating temperature from -60°C up to +230°C. However, the amount of time it spends exposed to such temperatures will define its ability to maintain integrity within application.
There are specialist types of silicone which can endure an even greater range of temperatures. High temperature silicone rubber can be exposed to temperatures as high as +300°C.
