Working Principle of Flame Retardant Silicone Foam

Nitrogen-containing flame retardants can absorb heat and produce noncombustible gases to dilute the concentration of combustibles during the decomposition process of polymers. In the meantime, although nitrogen-containing flame retardants are less competitive than phosphorus-containing flame retardants in terms of the flame-retardant efficiency, the nitrogen-containing flame retardants are relatively environmentally friendly and release only a small amount of smoke particles and toxic gases in the combustion process.

Silicone-containing flame retardants can often form an insulating layer on the polymer surface upon burning, thereby effectively impeding the transmission of oxygen, heat and mass and reducing the flammability of polymers. Moreover, compounds containing boron, zinc, iron, aluminum, and so on can suppress smoke and retard flame to some extents, but their application in engineering is limited. However, there are still some problems in the use of these flame retardant additives: increasing viscosity and modulus of the final polymeric material which will make industrial processing difficult, high loading and their potential toxicity to human health and environment.

This is why highly effective and environmentally benign flame retardant techniques are attracting attention increasingly. Particularly, fire retardant coatings prepared via layer by layer (LbL) assembly could be used as a potential substitute for additive flame retardants, due to their high flame-retardant efficiency as well as desired environmental acceptance and low impact on the intrinsic properties of polymers.

What Is the Use of Flame Retardant Silicone Foam?

There are a range of applications for fire retardant foam, all of which bring a selection of benefits. The primary benefit is that it is able to slow down the progression of fire by acting as a barrier, which helps with giving valuable extra time for building evacuation and fire fighting efforts.

Similarly, fire retardant foam can be created in various shapes and sizes, meaning it can be used in many different applications. These include being used in insulation, household furniture, automotive components, transportation interiors and as soundproofing materials.

Fire retardant foam is also great for thermal insulation. It is able to reduce heat transfer and also minimises the risk of structural damage during a fire. This is why it is so commonly used as standard within the construction industry.

Fire retardant foam is a good smoke suppressant too, helping to reduce the amount of smoke generated during a fire. It can help with the dispersion of smoke, which in turn improves visibility for fire crews.

How Do You Remove Flame Retardant Silicone Foam?

Foams and gels are short-term fire suppressants typically applied with ground equipment. Foams are typically 94-99% water and work by forming a foam blanket that smothers a fire. Foams can be removed by thoroughly rinsing an area with water.

Gels are super-absorbent polymer slurries with a consistency like petroleum jelly. Gels come in two forms: orange or clear gels which can be removed by rinsing with water and blue gels which must be cleaned up with an oil-based solvent.

Applications of Flame Retardant Silicone Foam in Everyday Household Items

Flame-retardant foam is utilised in a variety of household items to ensure safety and comfort:
· Upholstered Furniture: Provides a protective barrier against potential fire hazards.
· Mattresses: Enhances fire safety standards, ensuring a safer sleeping environment.
· Electronics: Integrated into devices like televisions and computers to inhibit the rapid spread of flames.
· Automotive Industry: Used in car seating to protect occupants and meet safety standards.

When Would You Need Flame Retardant Silicone Foam?

Fire rated foam is often misused due to poor understanding of its suitability. It is important to note that it should only be used to fill small linear gaps, gaps between a door frame and wall, and small holes in fire walls.

It cannot be used to fill large voids or openings, and can only fill gaps up to 35mm wide.

Fire rated foam is not suitable for use around pipe and cables as it doesn't intumesce or expand in extreme heat so the services would burn away and leave a void and thus breach the fire compartment.
