Benefits of High Temperature Silicone Sponge
Wide operating temperature – Silicone sponge has a temperature range of -100°F to 500°F (-73°C to 260°C).
Weather sealing – The closed cell structure allows for good weather sealing with relatively low compressive forces.
Compression set resistance – Silicone offers excellent compression set resistance (ability to rebound to original thickness), especially at higher temperatures, compared to most rubber material. Low compression set silicone sponges are available for even better performance than general purpose grades.
UV and ozone resistance – Silicone products have excellent UV and ozone resistance due in part to their inorganic backbone. This provides long term performance.
Rugged – When silicone is required, silicone sponge parts offer better toughness as compared to silicone foam products.
Outdoor gasketing – Silicone sponge is a good material choice for outdoor environments, from the Arctic to the desert.
FDA approval – This is needed for food and pharmaceutical packing equipment and product handling.
Application Scope of High Temperature Silicone Sponge
Building and Construction
1. Sealing and Insulation: High-temperature silicone foam tape is ideal for sealing gaps and providing insulation in buildings, offering protection against air and moisture ingress. Its thermal properties ensure consistent performance, thermal stability, and energy efficiency.
2. Fireproofing: Due to its high-temperature resistance, silicone foam tape is often used in building construction for firestopping applications, adding an extra layer of safety.
Industrial Applications
1. Machinery and Equipment Sealing: In industrial settings, machinery often operates under harsh conditions. Silicone foam tape can seal equipment casings, reducing the risk of contamination and extending equipment lifespan.
2. Vibration Dampening: It's also employed to reduce vibration in heavy machinery, which can help mitigate noise and prevent damage.
Utility Sector
1. Electrical Insulation: High-temperature silicone foam tape provides excellent electrical insulation, making it a go-to material for wrapping and protecting electrical components in the utility sector.
2. Weatherproofing: Utility infrastructure often faces exposure to the elements. Silicone foam tape provides reliable weatherproofing to protect sensitive components from wind, rain, and temperature fluctuations.
Will High Temperature Silicone Sponge Soften with Heat?
Compared to other materials, silicone transfers heat at a very low rate. This quality of high thermal resistance is what makes silicone so resistant to heat and gives it the ability to maintain its structure over a large temperature range. In fact, silicone is able to keep its structure even at temperatures as high as 93°C (200 °F). That's Hot!
Some silicone sealants are even designed to be more resistant to heat than the typical product making it possible to seal and rebuild engine gaskets with a tube of silicone and a caulk gun.
Additionally, silicone does not burn easy, making it perfect for projects where flammable material would be a liability. The product does not release any smoke or harmful gasses and can be used comfortably to seal in household electrical appliances.

What Is High Temperature Silicone Sponge Used For?
Silicone sponge sheeting is used for a variety of purposes, including sealing, cushioning, vibration dampening, and thermal insulation. Some specific applications of silicone sponge sheeting include:
Gaskets and seals
Silicone sponge sheets are used to create airtight and watertight seals in various industries, such as automotive, aerospace, and electronics. They provide excellent resistance to weathering, UV radiation, and extreme temperatures. See our Custom Cut Gaskets & Seals page.
01
Cushioning and shock absorption
Silicone sponge sheets are used as padding or cushioning material in packaging, electronics, and medical devices. They can absorb shocks and vibrations, protecting delicate components or products during transport or use.
02
Thermal insulation
Due to their low thermal conductivity, silicone sponge sheets are used to insulate and protect components that are exposed to high temperatures, such as in industrial ovens, furnace seals, or engine gaskets.
03
Sound dampening
Silicone sponge sheets can be used as soundproofing material in various applications, including architectural settings, automotive industry, or HVAC systems. They can reduce noise transmission and improve acoustic isolation.
04
Electrical insulation
Silicone sponge sheets are used as electrical insulators due to their excellent dielectric properties. They can be used to cover electrical wires or components, providing protection against electrical shocks or short-circuits.

To get the best results, you should follow proper safety precautions and application instructions when using high-temperature and heat-resistant silicone sealants. To start, surfaces must be clean and dry before use.
Tool the sealant immediately after application. If you are using a cartridge, cut the nozzles at 45-degree angles to obtain the desired bead size. Use a caulking gun to apply the sealant by pushing it ahead of the nozzle. Tool the sealant immediately after the sealant is applied and aim to get the tooling done within a 5- to 10-minute window.
When bonding materials and sealants, apply a bead of adhesive to one surface and immediately combine the two parts together. Then apply pressure to ensure the surfaces are in full contact. The high-heat sealant should be dry to the touch within 30 minutes and fully cured within the first 24 hours.
Never mix the sealant with other chemicals, and always wear protective eyewear when applying. Also be careful not to allow the adhesive to touch your skin or to breathe in the fumes. After use, store the sealant in a cool, dry place between 40°F and 90°F. All the application equipment should be cleaned with warm water.
What Is the Temperature Rating of High Temperature Silicone Sponge?
When choosing between solid silicone rubber, silicone sponge, and silicone foam, take into consideration your applications:
Operating temperature: While all these materials have a wide operating range, silicone foam can resist temperatures of -70°F to 400°F, silicone sponge has the best embrittlement performance resisting temperatures between 100°F - 500°F, and solid silicone rubber has the best high temperature performance withstanding from -80°F to >500°F.
Compression Requirements: Silicone foam can be compressed much more than silicone sponge and solid silicone rubber. Silicone sponge has excellent mechanical properties and provides watertight seals with minimal compression.
Needed strength: Solid silicone rubber has the highest tensile strength of the three, silicone sponge is next, while silicone foam has the lowest.
Electrical needs: Rubber is ideal for electrical applications.
Does High Temperature Silicone Sponge Melt?
Well, unlike most plastics that begin to melt at high temperatures, silicone doesn't.
However, at temperatures above 200°C (celsius), silicone rubber slowly loses its mechanical properties and becomes brittle over time.
To answer the question more accurately, you need to consider something: Silicone vs Silicon.
Note the difference.
Silicon is a naturally occurring chemical element. It is primordial. Silicone, on the other hand, is a synthetic polymer made of siloxane, which contains silicon, oxygen and other elements.
Notably, silicone can tolerate a wide range of temperatures. It doesn't melt. Instead, it remains solid, but only until it burns.
Silicone, a synthetic polymer, doesn't have an exact melting point, at least not at high temperatures. Nevertheless, it'll melt and burn at the right temperature.
